Our summer beach holiday doubled as a training camp this year, trying to clock up some hilly kilometres to put some steel in the legs for a big day in the mountains coming up later in January (www.alpineclassic.com.au).
We stayed at Tidal River at Wilsons Promontory, and I did the 60km return trip to the 'gate' for 5 of the 7 mornings we were there, as well as some laps up the short but sharp Mt Oberon.
Scenery stunning. Traffic quiet. The biggest issue was avoiding the kangaroos, emus and wallabies in abundance on the roadside at that time of the morning. And avoiding getting too much of a nose full from the decaying carcasses of animals that had come off second best against cars.
